Brother DCP-8060 Digital Print, Copy, Scan Review

Brother DCP-8060 Digital Print, Copy, Scan
Average Reviews:

I highly recommend the MFC-8820DN instead of this model. It's about the same price and it includes automatic duplexing (that's the 'D' in the model #) and it includes a network interface (that's the 'N' in the model #). Definitely don't go for a 7xxx model. The 8xxx models use high capacity cartridges which means about seventy bucks for > 6000 pages instead of fifty bucks for about 2000 pages for the 7xxx models. Think about it. After just a couple toner cartridges you'll have paid for the better machine!
I didn't buy mine on Amazon as they don't sell the MFC-8820DN. I don't know why - it's much better IMHO.

Sharp UXB20 Inkjet Fax Machine Review

Sharp UXB20 Inkjet Fax Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Sharp UX-B20 fax machine is easy to set up, does all that I want in a fax machine, prints on plain paper, and uses an ink jet cartridge rather than the hard-to-install roll of ink film. Also, the design of the machine is the "cleanest" and most compact I've seen. The ink cartridge is expensive, about twice as expensive as a roll of ink film. However, it will last about 500 sheets whereas a roll of ink film will only last about 250 sheets. So, the cost of the cartridge is very comparable. Rolls of film are usually about half the cost of the cartridge. Half the cost, but only half the number of sheets!! I like this machine!!

Brother DCP-8085dn Digital Copier and Laser Printer w/Full Duplex Capability and Networking Review

Brother DCP-8085dn Digital Copier and Laser Printer w/Full Duplex Capability and Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Contrary to one of the erroneous reviews, the Brother 8085DN DOES support duplex scanning and copying. That is why you pay $50-75 more than the 8080DN, which only does duplex printing.
We have the 8080DN and this series of Brother printers is FANTASTIC -- an amazingly powerful business printer for the price of a personal printer. These things are well built, meant for a busy workgroup/small business setting. My wife runs a small nonprofit and has to print board packets and this thing just cranks them out. It will happily print two-sided packets and collate them -- it will go hours of printing without a hiccup. Duplex printing is much slower than one sided printing -- DUH, that is true of ANY printer. You're not going to get high duplex speed until you get into the corporate printers.
We have also owned the Canon ImageClass duplexing printer. The Canons are terrific, very trouble free personal printer. But there is a HUGE catch -- their $65 toner cartridge will only go about 1,000 pages.
The biggest selling point for this printer -- the Brother 8000 series can use a high yield cartridge (about $85, or less if you feel comfortable using a remanufacture) that is rated at a whopping 8000 pages!!!
We do a lot of printing, so I researched extensively, and Brother is in a class by itself for cartridge capacity and low print costs for this class of printer. I highly recommend anything in the 8000 series.
The only reason you might not want this printer for a home office is that it is BIG. But you can't get performance like this in anything smaller that I know of.
Other good things:
1) Energy Star compliant. In sleep mode this printer only draws 18 watts to keep the drum warm. You'd be surprised how many printers eat 40 or 50 watts in standby mode, which will cost you $30 or $40 over a year's time. Energy Star means first page speed is not quite as good as the little HPs, but it's still only like 12 seconds.
2) This printer has TRUE networking capability -- no need for print server. That means the only connection you need is ethernet from your router to the printer. Install drivers, and every computer on the network can control this printer completely -- that means scanning as well. I can't tell you how much better that is than having a USB printer that has to be shared. Brother seems to have high quality drivers -- we've connected XP, Vista and Win 7 without a hitch.
To sum up, everything about this printer speaks of quality and durability. It is just incredible what you can get for $300-$350 these days.

Canon MF6530 Duplex Copier Laser Printer Review

Canon MF6530 Duplex Copier Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had four previous copiers in my home office over the years. Back in the stone ages (aka the late 70s and early 80s) I had one of those horrible 'pink paper' copiers, which was the only kind small and affordable enough for personal use. Next came a used Savin office copier in the mid 80s, then a Ricoh 'small office' copier in the late 80s and early 90s, and finally a Mita Copystar 'small office' copier until the present day.
Why am I telling you this? It is because I am not inexperienced with various copiers in home use, and it is because each machine has been a significant improvement over the previous. Each was less expensive to use (amortized purchase price per copy and supplies), faster, less hassle (fewer paper jams or general labor to use the machine), and each had better copy quality than the previous. I recall the prices were $800 (new), $600 (used), $1400 (new), $2000 (new), respectively. I mention this to set you up for the copier that is the subject of this review.
The Mita Copystar was a good machine, but took a couple of minutes after turning it on before it would make copies, I had to manually place each original on the platen (image table), it was slow, and it needed periodic service due to infrequent use and toner/drum issues, in order to maintain copy quality. The biggest problem was that it could not do double sides copies (it would misfeed if I tried), and there was no automatic document feeder, a real bummer as I stood there manually feeding each original as it took its time copying.
SO!
The Canon MF6530 has now replaced the Mita Copystar, and it is clear that copier technology and performance has obviously improved by orders of magnitude in the last ten years since the previous machine was made.
For $600, I get a smaller and lighter machine, with better copy quality and much faster speed. It uses a 'single cartridge' system, which means it is like a laser printer that needs an occasional toner cartridge replacement. And that is where this machine differs fundamentally from the earlier ones I had. It is basically a laser printer with an integrated scanner on top. How is this better than having a regular scanner and laser printer connected to your computer? Well, it has its own computer so it is faster, it is not limited by USB speed or how busy the computer is, and it does not have to boot a huge operating system before allowing you to use it, after being turned off to save power.
Using the MF6530 is like this:
It is always 'on', such as so many modern devices like DVD players, etc; but it sits there in low power mode with the internal computer aware but all the power hungry innards turned off. When I decide to use it, I press its Power button, and it clicks a couple of times and says 'Ready' in about 2 seconds. At this point I can place an original on the scanner platen or drop a stack of pages into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on top, and press the START button. The first copy comes out in about 5 seconds, and after that it runs at 23 pages per minute (about 1 copy every 3 seconds). When I am done, I can press the Power button again to put it to sleep, or it will go to sleep automatically if I don't use it for a couple of minutes.
The copier can do single-sided to single-sided, single-sided to double-sided, double-sided to double-sided, or it can also reduce two originals to fit them both side by side on a single copy. This works whether I use the scanner platen or the ADF. I just press a button to select which way I want it to go.
The copier has the usual buttons for selecting pre-defined zoom ratios (reduce & enlarge) and basic lightness/darkness. I can also press a few more buttons and have greater control of these settings, including a wide range of zoom with very fine increments, and fine image contrast adjustments.
The copier has a numeric keypad for entering values, including number of copies. There is a small LCD screen the shows the currently selected paper tray (internal bin or external tray), zoom ratio, number of copies selected, darkness setting (or automatic). My only beef is that there is no backlighting for the display; but it is easy to read in normal room lighting.
Double sided scanning from the ADF, and double sided copying or printing is slower than the 23 pages per minute. This is because both the ADF and printer engines use the same inexpensive method to manage the duplex paper handling. First the paper is pulled through the engine to scan/print the first side, then the paper is ejected almost all the way into the receiving tray before being pulled back in through a mechanism that routes it through the engine with the opposite side up for another scan/print, then eject, pull back again through the same flipping mechanism, but this time without the scan/print, just to get the paper back in its original orientation. Obviously this takes more time than regular single-pass paper handling. Still, this method allows an inexpensive machine to do full duplex work, and it is still reasonably fast on duplex mode.
The printer has a USB 2 port on the back, and the copier comes bundled with a CD-ROM with an application suite. It installs a copier toolbox, which when opened gives you basic control of functions like: copy, scan text, scan image, create PDF, print. Each button opens a sort of remote control panel for the copier, geared to the function being performed. This works well. Keep in mind that there is no need to connect the copier to your computer if all you want to do is make copies. You only need to connect it to the computer if you want to scan or use the copier as a printer.
The software suite also includes a page manager that lets you view your scans, or send documents to the printer. You don't need to use this program, as it just duplicates other programs you already have. The other major thing that gets installed is an OCR (optical character recognition) program that reads text in the scanned image. I scanned a 50 sheet, double sided book of loose-leaf pages, using the ADF, The OCR seems to take about 2 seconds per page to convert all text to computer readable format. The resulting PDF file (it can be told to make one PDF per page or group the whole set into a single PDF) was very clear and the search function in Adobe Acrobat was able to find any words in the document...a testimony to the accuracy of the OCR.
The paper tray holds a full ream of paper, very nice. The tray opens by sliding forward from the base of the copier, so there is no need to have open space to either side, as many other copiers require. The only thing on the copier that opens to the side is the hatch on the left side. This is in two parts: the upper part gives access to the toner cartridge when it runs out of toner and needs replacement. The lower part unfolds into the 50 sheet secondary paper tray. You would use this when you want to print onto paper that is too thick to feed from the normal paper tray, or when printing onto transparencies or other special paper.
The paper that exits the ADF ends up in a tray that is immediately under the ADF input tray, much like all those big industrial copiers at Kinkos. The copies themselves (and paper coming out when you use the copier as a printer) exits into another try that is right below the ADF exit tray. This took me a bit of getting used to, since out of habit I kept looking around to the sides, expecting the copies to come out into a tray there.
This copier can replace your existing laser printer and/or flat-bed scanner. However, if you already have that equipment and are not out of available space, you should keep those and NOT replace them with the copier. I say this because my HP flat bed scanner, while slower, has better quality (better color accuracy and higher resolution) than the scanner part of this copier, and this is probably true for most separate scanners. It is also not too easy to scan a bound book on the Canon, due to its design...a separate flat-bed scanner will be better for this. You should also use a separate dedicated scanner for scanning photographic prints when you want the best quality results. However, the printer part of the Canon is as good as my HP Laserjet, in terms of resolution, speed and duplex printing capability. However, the separate printer in my case has the advantage of being right next to my computer (more convenient); how many people really want their office copier next to their work area (remember that USB cables are maximum of 16 feet between computer and device). A dedicated laser printer is much smaller, and fits on a desk nicely whereas the Canon copier is not going to sit comfortably on your desk top in the corner, out of the way.
The Canon series of home/small office/personal copiers has an excellent reliability record, so I expect this machine to be trouble free for years to come. All critical print engine components are replaced when you change the toner cartridge, to there is nothing left that would normally require adjustment or service.

Brother MFC-5460cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking Review

Brother MFC-5460cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking to buy a printer and fax machine for some time. Our old fax m/c and the printer had reached the end of their lives. Recently Brother is having some great promotions with 2 year extended warranties. With the advertised low prices for these machines, I couldn't resist. After some research I decided to order the 5460 multi function all in one. Boy, am I delighted!
What I like:
============
- Setup was very easy. Hooking up the machine took me about 10 minutes. Installing the software, another 8-10.
- The print quality was great.
- The printer is network ready. It works with both wired and wireless networks. This feature alone is worth the price. No need for any wires from your computer or any computer on the network to the printer. If you don't have a network at home, don't worry. You can hook using a USB cable. The manufacturers don't include a USB printer cable usually as with this product. So don't discard the cable if you are throwing away your old printer - they cost around 35 bucks.
- You can receive the faxes onto your computer. You need to change the mode on the machine panel. The setup software opened up all the ports necessary. Now all the junk faxes goes to your PC and you don't have to waste paper! Even if your PC is off, the faxes are stored in the machine's memory so that you can later 'download' to your PC.
- You can send faxes right out of your PC using the provided software. Another cool thing. As I work from home remotely, this helps me a lot. Otherwise, I would have had to print out the documents before faxing. The software comes with an address book which can sync with your Outlook address book.
- The setup also enables your PC for internet faxing. i.e., even if you don't have your Brother fax machine connected, as long as you have an internet connection, you can fax documents using the internet. This is pretty cool though not a new feature. While I am at the airport, I can fax those last minute expense reports right from my laptop.
- I haven't tried the scan feature yet, that will be the least used feature for me.
- Given the print quality is good, I would believe the copier would be just great as well.
- The paper feeder sits within the footprint of the machine. This is another neat and space saving feature - no awkward paper supports hanging out.
- You also have digital media reader right in the front so that you can print directly from your media.
- The all-in-one is a space saver. It cleared much space off my work table. With all-in-ones, say, if the cartridge goes bust, all parts are affected though.
What could be better?
=====================
- The USB cable and the network cable slots are not on the outside of the machine. You have to lift up the top bed and wire these inside. This takes up about 10-20% of the cable length depending on where you position your PC/laptop relative to the machine.
- The Brother cartridges are always relatively expensive compared to, say, Canon. I have found that Brother's tend to be more durable than Canon. But for the higher end Canon's you do pay more. So it is a trade-off between up-front price/running cost (ink refills, cartridge) and reliability.
At this point I love the machine. For $99 after MIR and extended 2 yr warranty, it is a great holiday deal!

Brother MFC-440CN Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Networking Review

Brother MFC-440CN Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have no complaints with this product. It amazes me a device with so many features for such a low cost can produce the quality of images of the Brother MFC-440cn. It replaced (and improved the quality and speed) of three devices, and freed lots of room at the workstation. There may be more expensive devices that can produce higher quality images, but I can't imagine the quality can improve much over what this can do. For 8x10 color images it is great. The scanning quality and speed is excellent for my needs. Throw in the fax and copy capability with a color LCD menu screen AND the ability to print directly from memory cards and you've got one fantastic and useful piece of equipment. I'll have to get used to the included software, but it has some nice features as well as some minor quirks. Once you scan an image, it is not intuitive what you are supposed to do next. A small problem overall. Changing cartridges is the most convenient and simple process I've experienced on an inkjet printer. I would buy this device again.

Brother FAX-1360 Monochrome Inkjet Fax & Copier Review

Brother FAX-1360 Monochrome Inkjet Fax and Copier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you do a moderate amount of faxing, and need a stand alone fax, this is a great machine. You can scan faxes into the memory while it is sending, so if you have several faxes to send, you can scan them all in at once. Saves a lot of time. The inkjet faxes are much easier to read than thermal rolls.
The reason I didn't give it a five-star was that it wouldn't receive right out of the box. Took a good 15 minutes on the phone with Brother's customer service (here in the US, BTW...) but it got done. Some internal setting was off. But, it now works great. Just know that's a very minor problem if it occurs. Nuisance.

If you need a dedicated fax machine for a small or medium sized off then the Brother 2800 may be just the right choice. It is a solid performer that offers a low cost per page and includes pretty much every feature that you would need in a black and white fax machine.
Nowadays it is not particularly sexy to "just" be a fax machine, but in many situations you are better off having a fax machine seperate from your copy machine, seperate from your printer. At our 20 person office that is certainly true. We had a multifunction machine and it was used to much which created lots of complexity for those of us sharing it. LInes waiting for a fax to be received so we could print, waiting to make copies while a long document is printing, and confusion over how to install and setup access for everyone's PC.
We tried to find a less expensive standalone machine but could not find one that seemed well buiilt and cost effective. The color fax machines are ink jet based and cost a lot more per page. My experience with inkjets is that they also require more maintenance. The Borthe 2800 has a straight through paper path which has not jammed for us, and we've had no issues with paper feeding.
I think that for a really small office of 1-5 people that a multi-function unit makes sense, but for anything larger you need seperate machines. If that's the case, the Brother machine is a good choice in fax machine with its laser output, high paper volume, full feature set, and relatively simple interface.

A solid laser-fax machine at an accessible price, the 2800 zips out 10 pages per minute, printing on standard plain paper. Its price makes it ideal for home office use--finally, an affordable alternative to thermal transfer or ink-jet machines for those of us in small offices.
The 14.4K modem, integrated telephone handset, fax forwarding, paging and remote retrieval, 108 auto-dial locations, and broadcasting to up to 158 locations all combine to make the 2800 an impressive value. The 2800 is compatible with call waiting/caller ID and distinctive ring. Other features include a 20-page automatic document feeder and a 200-sheet paper tray, accommodating both letter and legal-size paper.

Brother MFC-8480DN High-Performance Laser All-in-One with Networking and Duplex Printing Review

My wife is a middle grades teacher and the copiers at her school are always broken are in use by someone else, so we do all her printing and copying at home - LOTS of printing and copying. I really like the speed and the automatic duplexing. We expect to cut our paper cost by 30-40%. We also create a pdf of each assignment/worksheet to upload to her website so students can get any missed assignments. The scanner - scan to file - option allows you to specify pdf file type and is very fast.
The Automatic Document Feed is excellent with no jams so far even with large documents. We also print hall/bathroom passes on business card stock using the single sheet feeder with no jams. So far we have printed about 5,000 pages and have had no real problems. Setting up the network for sharing the printer was very easy. We expect to print about 5,000 pages per month - well under the 25,000 duty clcle. Our previous MFC 8220 is still being used by a colleague after 3 drum replacements - we just wanted the extra speed and auto duplex this machine provided.
The software provided for scanning is easy to use and very versatile. We haven't used the fax function yet. So far we are very pleased with the speed, auto duplex and scanning features and have had no driver issues using both XP and Vista.
It is a great machine for someone needing a heavy duty networked duplex capable machine.

Brother DCP-7020 Laser Digital Copier/Printer Review

Brother DCP-7020 Laser Digital Copier/Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I almost never write a review, but the forest of multi-functions is so thick and I am so impressed by my Brother DCP-7020 that I figure I ought to share my personal view of this tremendous small office/home-office machine.
I spent weeks researching and testing multi-functions, going back and forth among Brother, HP, Sharp, Xerox, Canon, and others. What a nightmare, sorting out and comparing all the rival features!
My own needs were straight-forward: truly excellent, professional-looking B&W laser printing and copying capability; reliable paper-path routing with few or no jams; able to handle periodic high volume and otherwise steady daily use; large paper tray capacity; reliable Auto Document Feeder; handy and roomy output tray; acceptable color as well as B&W scanning; and reasonably priced laser supplies that have a reasonably high volume capacity.
While I had no need for fax or networking, I might have taken either or both if the quality of the more important features I sought warranted the extra price. I also was hoping for a stand-alone copying capability, just to give me more flexibility in office machinery since I also have a Brother HL-5150DLT (which is a tremendous stand-alone printer, by the way!)
Several times I almost decided on the Sharp AL-1641CS or its equivalent at Canon and Xerox. My initial misgivings about the latest Brother multifunction machines came down to three things: I was concerned about a few reports of modest paper curling; I was nervous about the paper output slot which seemed at first glance kind of puny and inconveniently located at the inside front, rather than outside to the side, of the machine; and the Brother multi-function machines somehow didn't look to me quite as robust or strong as some of their competitors, at least as they sat on the store shelf.
Repeated testing in multiple stores convinced me that the Brother DCP-7020 was the most likely to meet my needs at an initial price (and also a lower laser cartridge supplies price) so substantially less than the Sharp or equivalents that I decided to 'chance' it, as I thought. It turned out far, far better than I had hoped.
This is a GREAT workhorse machine that takes up substantially less work space and yet turns out excellent laser printing and/or copying with sharp, professional-looking text. Reliable, smooth paper handling with no paper jams to speak of (other than one deliberately caused for testing, which was very easily cleared). Superior copying capability (stand-alone or attached to a computer.) And, though not my top priority, very good scanning as well, supported by excellent, intuitive software.
The earlier review and product descriptions you can read at Amazon.com are accurate. This machine is awesome; the best buy for the money you will find, unless you need faxing capability or color printing in your multi-function. As for my original misgivings, here's my experience:
(1) Paper curling. Not a problem! The paper curling reports are true but greatly exaggerated. Very, very minor curling occurs (probably due to the extreme heat needed for any laser printing), but the paper flattens quickly as it cools and in a minute or so you won't even know it had a slight curl as it emerged from the machine.
(2) Output tray. Not a problem! True, the output slot at the front of the machine looks a little inconvenient or insubstantial, but that turns out to be a mirage, probably because we are so accustomed to expecting to see a bulky exterior separate output tray. The Brother DCP-7020 output tray actually is an innovation. It works perfectly and can hold up to 100 pages, no problem. Lift the lid below the copier and you will see you have access to the entire output tray in all its glory.
(3) The wrong-est I was in my initial misgivings was in thinking that visually the Brother DCP-7020 looked somehow more fragile, or less robust, than the Sharp or similar competitors. It may look that way, but in reality it is every bit as much a workhorse machine as its equivalent competitors. The DCP-7020 is a strong, muscular, and reliable machine. Just a much smaller footprint and at half the price.
Although not my own top priority, I've also been very pleasantly surprised at how good the scanning function is. A couple of reviewers here and there on the web grumble about this, but I found the Brother DCP-7020 scanning function and quality does at least well with color photos as any other $200-$400 scanner I've used, and far better than most of them. The text recognition software is far superior to what most well known competing brands use. And the scanner control panel is very intuitive with good defaults and ample opportunity to easily customize. I've wound up putting my 1 year old $400 HP scanner in the attic.)
I unhesitatingly recommend the Brother DCP-7020. It is everything I wanted in a B&W laser printer/copier/scanner -- and more! -- at half the price of the competition.
Afterword about Brother support: For those concerned about tech support, there is good, and bad, and more good news -- but REALLY good news if you pay attention to what I have to say here.
1. Good news: Brother's toll-free number you can call in an emergency usually leads you to a live English-speaking person who isn't in India or Sri-Lanka or some other Exploited-Labor-of-the-Month hell hole.
2. Bad news: Like the infamous Indian "tech support" people we all know and loath, you probably will get an American who is mostly clueless other than they've been trained to read the manuals. If you haven't read the manual yourself, they can be a kind of "aural" manual and walk you through a few quick fixes. If you know the manual and those fixes haven't worked, go to the next point below.
3. More good news: If you have time to e-mail or call Brother support and ask specifically for a truly knowledgeable tech person to contact you, in a day or at most two you will wind up being called by a REAL expert who will take the time to answer all of your questions patiently and in depth. These people know what they're doing. They're honest and knowledgeable. They are the way tech support used to be, once upon a time.

This device is basically identical to the MF4370dn which is heavily (and positively) reviewed. As near as I can tell there are three differences between the two units:
1) The D480 is beige, the MF4370 black
2) The D480 has am improved document feeder
3) The D480 has more complete duplexing than the MF4370.
I was actually alerted to #3 by an Amazon review. You can put a stack of two-sided documents into the feeder and produce a set of two-sided duplicates. According to the Amazon reviewer the MF4370 will take two-sided docs in the feeder but can only produce single-sided docs in response.
I haven't tried this with a thick stack of documents but onesie/twosie stuff seems to work great, at least with plain copy paper. I tried duplex-copying a mortgage statement printed on thick paper and the feeder choked on it.
Copying is fast, quiet and sharp. I'm delighted by it, actually. Duplexing is really simple. Manually scanning two different sheets onto one two-sided document or just copying a two-sided document are both very easy. The biggest limitation is the size of the platen. I didn't think I'd even notice this but if you're used to throwing down a book or something of a full-size copy machine you'll feel a bit cramped. If you want to scan oversized stuff you're of out of luck, but that's true of every machine in this price range.
The D480 seems to be a perfectly capable printer and supports full duplexing right from software. I do most of my printing to an HP 3600dn and don't see that changing except for printing music, where duplexing will be really nice to have. Network printing was really easy to set up.
Scanning is where this device falls a bit flat, and that's due almost entirely to the software, not the hardware. Even thought it has a Vista logo on the box it still relies on TWAIN drivers so it doesn't integrate with "Scanners and Cameras" under Vista. The software they ship to scan with is hokey but seems to work. I guess I can hope that Canon will ship updated drivers but I won't hold my breath. I am a little peeved at MSFT for letting Canon put a Vista logo on the box.
Network scanning is a joke on this device (same as with MF4370). The process for doing this is just stupid, and the file transfer is ungodly slow. I was hoping to just pop some docs into the ADF and press a button and have them show up but you can't really do it in the backgrond and the file transfer times are godawful slow. This is partly due to the size of the data but not completely - it's REALLY REALLY SLOW. To give you an idea it took something like a minute or two to transfer an 88KB image. That's KILOBYTES. I think the scanner must send a raw dump over the network which is processed on the host machine. In any case, it's tricky to set up and basically unusable. Note to Canon: "Scan to USB Flash Drive" would be a far better feature.
On the bright side there is support for scanning several pages from the ADF into a single (or multiple) PDFs. There is some sort of OCR software but I haven't tried to use it yet. We hope to scan bills and whatnot and toss the originals - I guess I'll see how well that works out.
I haven't tried the faxing capability. Having a halfway decent ADF will be a godsend for sending contracts or NDAs around, but I'll probably rely more on scanning to PDF than actually faxing. I never receive faxes - I use online services like eFax.
Finally I have to ding the awful documentation. It's really quite bad - I had to call tech support to try to figure out network scanning and found out that even though I didn't want to use USB scanning I still had to do a USB install. Oops. If you want to do anything non-trivial you're going to be experimenting and cursing a bit. Canon's tech support was actually quite good, but better docs would have saved them the cost of the call.
So, as the title says, the hardware is quite good for $250 but the software side is a little lacking. Even though I poo-poo the device a lot I am pretty pleased with it. Based on what I've seen so far I can recommend it for SOHO use if network scanning or tight Vista integration is not going to be a high-priority item for you. I wouldn't recommend using it as a primary departmental printer because the input tray is dinky, but I don't think you'll find a better device under $500.

Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking Review

Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Brother printer to replace an HP 2840 color laser. I like the Brother. It's smaller and quieter. It doesn't have to calibrate a couple times a day either. Scans are way faster than the HP and the scan quality if far better than the HP. Copies and printing are great, as expected. I don't ever fax so I can't address it's capabilities there.
I found one limitation with this printer that prevented me from giving it five stars. The printer can only be used as a network printer attached to the router via an Ethernet cable or it can be a workstation printer supporting one PC attached via a USB cable. If your using Windows networking to share the printer (i.e. it's connected to one PC via USB and enabled for print sharing), it's not supported. What? You got it. Brother won't let you share the printer other than to have it setup as a network printer attached to the router.
This is an issue if, like me, the router is nowhere near the printer and you want to do a lot of scanning using the PC based utilities vs. the little screen on the printer. You can scan with it as a network printer but you can only do it using the function keys on the printer itself. You lose the benefits of the PC software based approach. If you do any volume of scanning, you want the PC utilities enabled.
I was able to work around the problem and get it working like I wanted but it took a couple days working on and off to sort out. I called Brother technical support. They kindly told me the printer doesn't support what I wanted to do and I should return the product. What? Unbelievable!!
To get it to work as a shared USB attached printer, you have to go through the CD install process on each PC. That's okay once you understand that's the process.
The only remaining limitation is quickly setting up a temporary shared user. Say your brother-in-law is in town for the weekend and needs to print. He can't use the Windows "Add a printer" function and get to your Brother printer. You have to go find the CD and do a full install for your brother-in-law to print his Mapquest directions home. It's not a huge problem but Brother should not have designed it this way.
Hope it helps somebody.

Brother IntelliFax 2820 Laser Fax Machine and Copier Review

Brother IntelliFax 2820 Laser Fax Machine and Copier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're in the market for a fax machine this is the one. I also owned the Brother 2800. This is the new and revised version of the 2800. Apparently Brother does improve upon their faults. You can see my review on the 2800 and the downfalls. For a re-cap:
1. 2800 had paper jams when using old paper. The 2820 has a paper feeder like their printers which greatly reduces jams. (I also own brothers laser printer) Now I can use recycled (one-side already printed) paper and not have to deal with jams. Also 2820 holds much more paper in its tray, so you wont have to worry about running out.
2. 2820 has a new feed system which reduces jams when faxing out. I had problems faxing 20+ pages with the 2800, now none with 2820. However they say there is a limit to 20 pages (just add more pages as they feed through).
3. The only downfall is the toner is slightly more expensive. It does print more pages, but does cost a bit more. Fax machine is more expensive also.
Overall, if you don't want to deal with the 2800 problems then pay the extra money for the 2820 and feel confident with its performance. If money is an issue, get the 2800. Personally the few extra bucks is worth it over aggravation when trying to fax/receive.
Another added bonus feature: This fax can also connect to the computer through USB allowing to work as a printer. I currently have this set-up and works very well. Have no issues priting with this fax machine. Great feature if you don't want to buy a printer. (2800 does not have this feature)

I was concerned that this model might be as bad as the 1240 model, but after about a week of use, the 1040 model is working good. No paper feeding problems when sending faxes.
The fax machine is sharing the same line as my regular phone with no problems, but you must physically locate your answering machine next to the fax so that you can plug it into your fax machine for this to work. Messages go to the answering machine, and faxes go to the fax machine just as they should.

I was happy with the Canon PC11 copier I purchased in 1993 for $1,000 but it was no longer repairable. I never expected to get a great copier for less than $200. The only negative is that if you leave paper in the copier it sticks out in front so I remove the paper when I am done making copies. Not a big deal everything considered because the Canon D420 Laser Copier makes fantastic copies and I bought it from Amazon at a great price.
