Brother HL4570CDW Wireless Color Printer Review

(More customer reviews)The Brother HL4570cdw is a fantastic printer for everyday and office use. This is my first Brother purchase. I'm using it to print out full colored brochures (graphics, photos, and text). So far it's been more than adequate when using the appropriate paper i.e. glossy paper. When on regular paper, the colors are not as sharp and pictures are not as clear. For photos, the resolution quality is acceptable/good, but there is a noticeable difference in quality from a print shop and a heavy duty office printer (you know the 5 foot jumbo printers).
As for print speeds, from start to finish it prints at an above average pace. The spooling process is quick (less than 2 minutes) for a 80 mb print job. It printed a 60 page, full color (vivid mode), double sided booklet in about 8-10 minutes.
PROS
- Easy printer and wireless Setup (less than 5 minutes).
- Good print speeds (auto-duplex and straight printing).
- Excellent print quality for general graphics and text.
- Good photo quality when using the right paper.
- Acceptable noise level for a printer
- Toner replacements are cheaper than HPs, Lexmark, and Canon.
CONS
- Printer reads toner as empty when full. You must do the toner trick which involves covering the clear holes with black electric tape on the toner cartridges as a temporary solution. For a more permanent solution, you need to reset the computerized toner levels on the printer. You do this by 1) Opening the printer door 2) Holding Back and Cancel at the same time 3) A menu to reset the toners pops up 4) You hit Okay to reset.
- I printed approximately 900 full color pages with the "starter" cartridges it came and some cartridges are already visibly running low. While the prints were on the high color (vivid) settings, it is a shame that this printer appears to be another "toner hog" and did not print to the 3000/1500 page estimates the cartridges claim.
- Photo prints are poor when printing full sized photos on regular paper. For best printing results you need to use specialized glossy paper.
- Must use "multi-purpose" pullout feeder tray for specialized paper or else risk paper jams
- Very slight paper curl
- Noise level maybe too loud for a quiet office space.
I compared the Brother HL-4570cdw's print quality extensively with HPs and Canon color lasers in this price range, and the Brother printed out more impressive looking demo prints than its competitors. The print quality is enough to merit the purchase of this printer and because the toner replacements are relatively cheaper than other companies the Brother HL-4570cdw receives my recommendation.
Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend it if you get it for the right price. I would not pay more than $400-$425 for this machine which is the price I paid.

(More customer reviews)After a reload of the OS, my old HP laser was no longer compatible with my Mac computer, so I went looking for a color laser that did duplex printing (trying to be a bit green). My use is at home for personal as well as some business printing.
The set up was easy and the instructions clear. Printing in B&W single sided is fast and of high quality. I find the color printing to be a bit muted and not photo-like, but still acceptable. The biggest negative is the duplex printing. It works, but... When I select two-sided printing, it takes forever to print. It is so slow that I have given up using it completely. As I was hurrying out of the house on a road trip, I tried to print a Google map in duplex, and it took so long I simply left the house without the map. I don't know what is going on inside, but this is so bad I'm shocked it ever was released.
Once I ignore duplex printing, and treat it like a nice feature I will rarely if ever use, then I am generally satisfied with the printer and recommend it for the price.

(More customer reviews)OK I have to brag, had a friend at Dell give me a 17% off discount when I ordered my computer system. Then he emails me a 30% off coupon for a printer and asked if I needed one. Wasn't planning on getting a printer, but with that discount I had to see what was available. When I saw the 30% was ADDED to the 17% system discount I had to jump on it. Bottomline it cost me $380! LOL
It's pretty new but I managed to find one review to make sure it was good before I bought it. Am I Glad I did. Just found another review at MacWorld that placed it second to the $800 Xerox, basically because the Xerox is more quiet.
Even at the regular price of $650 it's a great buy. Manufacturers are notorious for BS on their print speeds, but this thing smokes! It's very close to the 23 ppm advertised speed, but what's really amazing is how quick it spits out the first page.
The important part, flash and features aside, the print quality on black and white text is amazing, incredibly sharp. The color is good, but on some photos I think the output needs to be calibrated, makes some images a little reddish.
Love most of the features, it's nice to be able to scan pages right to your computer as a pdf file to easily email.
The ONLY donwside I have with this computer which was a disappointment is that I couldn't set it up to email a scanned image directly from the printer. For some dumb reason the software to set it up to email docs asks for the primary smtp gateway address, but only accepts a numerical address instead of textual(like you would enter with outlook) so bottomline I spoke with 4 different Dell techs and none of them could make it so it could email via my qwest account's smtp server. So that is a feature I would have liked, but unless Dell comes up with a fix I won't be able to. That being said I can scan to my computer and then attach doc to email, but an unnecessary extra step.
As for noise, it's a little loud when in action, but I think that's typical for color lasers and not any louder than some HP's I have tested in stores.
Copy speeds are great and images are very close to originals. Scanned images look great as well.
If you are tired of slow and expensive to use color ink jet mfp's, take the step up to laser with this great offering by Dell, you won't be disappointed!

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA) Review

(More customer reviews)I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake. I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus. This new machine is definitely a major improvement.
First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system. I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it.
It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet. It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length - it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back). It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black - CMYK) so this can be costly. The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color. It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long. And when the toner is low, you get a warning. You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages).
The Bad: I'll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder. I may be doing something wrong, but I've found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time. Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I'm done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side. You can't really do that with this. And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best. You can't simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it. You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print. It did print generic Avery labels okay though.
All in all, it is great. Oh, and there's one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn't know these terms before). For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the 'Finishing' tab and selected 'Print on Both Sides' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything. I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect.
If you don't need to have this printer on a network, and you don't need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser. Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars. I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it's superb. Get yours now - the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go. You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don't have one. Enjoy and thank you for reading.

Brother HL-3040CN Compact Digital Color Printer with Networking Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned color lasers from HP, Xerox, and Lexmark previously. All of them had issues that gave me fits. All had installation and driver issues which cost me many hours of time to resolve.
No such problems here. Plug it in, answer a few questions, and it's printing. I have Windows 7 64 bit, and I was cringing because I expected problems, but I didn't have any. I used the network setup with an Ethernet cable plugged in, and now all the computers in my house can see it and use it. I never did get networking to work right on the Xerox, though I fiddled with settings for the better part of a couple of days.
The print quality of this printer is only fair, but for business use it's more than adequate. I've printed a set of training manuals, which have quite a bit of graphics in them, and not noticed the problems noted by another reviewer. Now it's true that this is not a photo printer, and the quality of the printing is not as good as the Xerox 8560 I had, or various photo printers I've seen. But it's fine for typical reports, slide printouts, and so forth.
As to capacity, I printed about 900 pages with this printer out of the box, and it's still going. A negative reviewer reported problems in getting only a small number of pages with the starter toner, and expressed surprise at the 5% coverage guideline used to estimate pages. Well, every printer I've ever had used that same 5% to estimate page capacity and cost, so I don't see the problem here. I have almost printed the number of pages the printer is supposed to get out of the box without getting any low toner problems.
Another advantage: this printer's replacement cartridges are cheaper than any of the other printers I've owned, even the crayon-like blocks for the Xerox.
The printer also has a draft mode that saves toner, which was not available on any other printer I've owned. I don't expect to use it, but others might find it helpful.
So the bottom line is that the price, speed, quality, and ease of setup make this a very good match for home office or light departmental business color printing. As someone who has been around the block with various color lasers, this one has been a very pleasant surprise.
**Update 14 Jan 2010**
I'll subtract half a star for the marginal front feed mechanism. When I use lightweight card stock through the front feeder, every three pages or so I get no feed and a spurious paper jam. I have to exert a small amount of pressure with my hand on the sheet to ensure that it feeds correctly. If it feeds, the result is good because of the flat paper path, but the front feeder ought to work better than that, especially since it only takes one sheet at a time.

I just began replacing toner cartridges after getting about 1100 pages from the in-the-box set. They cyan cartridge went first and the magenta cartridge a bit later, which was no surprise since my slide theme has a lot of blue in it.
I got another pleasant surprise: the printer demanded new cyan toner after printing 60 of 75 pages for a manual. I thought I would probably have to start over (because Powerpoint is utterly stupid about numbering pages on handouts). No problem, though. The printer stays on for toner cartridge replacement, and it's easy as pie to do it. Just don't forget to slide the gizzy back and forth that cleans the corona wire. After putting the cover back down, the printer picked up where it left off and knocked out the last fifteen pages.
In other news, I found a 256M DIMM from an old laptop, and upgraded the printer's memory. Really easy, though of course you do have to turn it off for that one. There's an exposed slot on the side to put the memory in, and it came right up when the printer was turned back on. The printer is faster now, and doesn't tie up my computer as long on these 75 page print jobs.
The printer status software advised me of a firmware update, which I applied. That was easy too, and it improved the print quality somewhat.
The only bad news is that the front feed mechanism for non-standard stock is definitely sub-par. I needed to print some labels through the front feed, and had the same problem with phantom jams that I had earlier with card stock. You have to hold the stock juuuuust riiiiiight to get it feed correctly. That's the only major flaw in a printer than has been a very pleasant surprise overall.

Brother HL-4040cn Color Laser Printer with Built-in Network Interface Review

(More customer reviews)Got this printer due to my 2 other very positive Brother Laser printers, HL5240 & MFC7840W, both excellent, fast and very reliable, the second reason is my old favorite, Konica Minolta 2300DL (Color Laser) is dying and hoping to combine the function with my still working Brother HL5240 to save space.
Involved with design and illustrations, I print 80% of my work & documents in full color or combination text & color images, in short, I'm very color sensitive.
Brother HL 4040CN is very easy to network even with Multi Window OS desktops, my home office got 2 Vista, 2 XP pro & a XP Media Center PC. Very fast and good text printing quality, actually the color is not even that bad, if I'm not that sensitive.
Pros:
Easy to install and network.
Flip up LCD minimized glare and makes it easy to read the text and ink monitoring.
Fast wake up from sleep or energy saver mode, I really like the light blinking when the machine it in progress or warming up.
Easy front access both for toner replacement, paper tray & bypass paper slot, kind of idiot proof.
Noise level when printing and warm up is comparable to my other laser printers, probably less.
Heavy and looks like it's very well built.
USB interface on the front is a plus.
Cons:
Color prints are warmer and slightly purple & green compared to the output from my Epson Inkjet & Magicolor prints.
On the Green side, I think Brother should redesign their packaging, the unit is almost the same size as HP but the box is 100% more, it's so big that I can't even fit it in regular NYC yellow cab, I probably need to rent a UHAL van the next time I buy one of this.
I was trying hard to love this printer and keep it even though the color prints are a little off, not until when my nephew drops by, look at the print and said to me, "nice terrazzo floor with beige field and gray border", with that comment, I realized it's time to return the printer, since the actually floor have white field and green borders.
In fairness, I replaced this with a HP CP1518ni, Hp is even worst, prints much darker than any of my color laser, slower than Brother, slightly prints more red & orange, not as sharp and very muddy. I end up getting another Konica Minolta, Magicolor 2550, it's the closes match of a laser print that you could get to a decent ink jet print. But if I have to pick between Brother and HP from this experience, I'll take Brother without hesitation. And finally.....Thank you Staples, you are the best.

Brother HL-2700CN Color Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)This is another good product from Brother. We use a number of different types of printers in our business and this is the best of bunch.
We have an all Mac office, and set-up was a breeze. We've networked it, and it also works well using the Mac's built in printer sharing over a wireless network.
Color is great, with the right resolutions you get good photographic reproduction. We use it very effectively with brochures.
One of the downsides is that accessories are expensive. Another is that in operation it is a little noisy. While in operation it makes a number of clunks and bumps, something to do with the switching between the various cartridges I think.
All and all though a very good machine. And by the way shop around a little for toner. It can be had for a lot less then the list price.

It is used intermittanly so I wanted a laser, it is normally in my basement so I wanted networking and duplex, and color would be a plus if not too expensive. After looking at all the possiblities, my head was spinning and I was ready to settle for a mono-laser with network and duplex.
But then I stumbled on the new Lexmark C543dn color laser on sale that had everything I wanted, a high resolution color laser with networking and duplex. The only review I could find of the C543dn was from [..] which thought the colors were too vivid. PC Magazine gave the similar faster C544dn an Editors Choice and only criticised text smaller than 4 or 5 points. It may not be small, but it is not as tall as some color lasers and I was able to carry and place it myself without any help.
Open Office Writer doesn't even list fonts smaller than 6 points and Word 2007 does not list fonts smaller than 8 points (unless you shrink fonts). French Script may start to lose detail at 4 points, but Arial is fully formed at 3 points and Times New Roman is easy to read (with a magnifiying glass) at 3 points, with only a slight defect in small "e". As far as I can tell, text at any normal size is sharp and well formed.
When I first started printing images, colors did seem too vivid. But the default if you select "Image" from print properties is "sRGB Vivid". If you select "Text" it also uses sRGB Vivid, to make sure that you get solid text. The default "Text/Graphics" uses sRGB Display to approximate your computer display. Those and other color settings can be adjusted from the printer's web interface (or print properties menu while printing).
I still found red and blue a little heavy for my taste (orange too red and green too blue), or maybe just not enough yellow. So I settled on these printer color changes for now:
RGB Brightness = 1 (default 0)
Cyan = -1 (default 0)
Magenta = -2 (default 0)
That works for me using default "Text/Graphics" to print natural looking photos or pdf's. I do select Text if just printing text. The Image setting may be better for colorful brochures or if you expect colors to fade.
The only other criticism from [..] was cost of supplies. But Lexmark implemented a rewards program that gives you any 10th black or color free, and free imager when you need it. So that brings the cost in line typical for this printer class at 3 cents/page for black and 15 cents for color.
The C543dn is rated for 35,000 prints per month, but high yield color cartridges are good for 2000 pages and black for 2500 pages and imagers are rated for 30,000 pages. So high high volume corporate users would need something bigger with larger toner capacity.
But for a casual user, with a few adjustments, I am very pleased with the Lexmark C543dn and cannot imagine what could be better for my needs (other than wireless, which is an option).
Notes: Even if you are one of the rare people who reads and follows instructions, the printer will say check for packing materials when you first power it up. The similar C540 comes with 1000 page starter toner, the C544 is faster and has a USB port to print pictures from memory stick or camera without a computer.

I recently bought this printer, and it is fantastic, clean and crisp prints... and full color in the same time it takes to print a text page, about 20 seconds. And you don't have to replace the cartridge every other week, so far it's been 3 months and I haven't changed the toner yet. I say if you can afford this now, it will pay off in the long run.

Brother HL-3070CW Compact Digital Color Printer with Wireless Networking Review

My problem is that I printed a few hundred pages and then the printer reported IT WAS OUT OF TONER. WTF? The "starter" toner was supposed to be at least a few thousand pages.
I made the mistake of buying a new black toner cartridge. Then after it printed a few pages, it said the magenta cartridge was out of toner! I was trying to print black! This printer has a serious problem of not knowing when or if the toner cartidges is either out of, or completely full of toner.
After I found this trick, I got another 1,000 pages out of that "empty" toner cartridge.
Here's how to fix the problem (quoted from someone else but it really works... you can Google this problem and it will say to put electical tape on the sensor, but that does NOT NOT NOT work with this printer. Only this will work):
1)' Turn the printer off and then on again.
2) Open cover.
3) Press Cancel and Secure Print buttons at the same time.
4) Press the + button and scroll through the colors that need to be reset. (reset both STR and STD when prompted. I just reset them all.
5) Press OK (twice, once for STR and STD)
6) You're done. You don't even need to take the cartridges out and the printer thinks you just installed four new toner cartridges.
Reset menu for the durable parts counters:
1. Open cover where you access toners
2. Press GO and + button at once, you'll see menu come up displaying reset counters for drum, fuser, etc.
This unit has stopped printing four times, telling me that I've burned through three magenta toner cartridges. Each time I used this "secret" reset method and fixed it. I'm still on the original magenta cartridge. This "secret" reset method has saved me $200.
Oh, Brother... fix this problem and quit robbing people by making your printers tell them they are out of toner when they really are not. What you are doing is just plain weak. WEAK!

I was looking for a printer to replace my Brother MFC-9840CDW, which is a color/wireless all-in-one (AIO). Brother had not come out with a newer model that bettered this AIO that I have had for a couple of years. Since I was going to have to buy multiple new Brother toner cartridges for color, which would be 1/2 the price of a completely new model, I was in the market for a new AIO. My reqirements were AIO, laser, color, wireless networking and good user feedback. My Brother repair center told me that they can definitely tell the difference in HP color printers versus the other guys. Since my Brother gave out weak/light color prints, and the color accuracy was pretty bad, I wanted to like the HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw, which just came out and did not have any user comments.
I purchased from HP's SMB with a 30-day return policy. If you go through another center, your return period may be shorter. When I opened the box, only the main unit and an installation guide were inside. The box said I should get power/USB/phone cables and an installation CD, but they were missing. Due to a backorder delay, I was advised to order a new unit and ship the old one back. I got the drivers online and used a spare 3-prong computer-type power cable to test out the unit. Based on my findings in the rest of this review, I will be returning the HP for my money back.
I wanted wireless to minimize the cables going into my Apple Mac mini (mid-2010) which also has built-in wireless networking. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit via Boot Camp. You initially need the USB cable so the installation software can configure the unit to your computer and router. Once that was done, the computer was able to see the HP right away. This was much easier than the Brother, which required me to manually configure both the computer and AIO, and I had to call Brother's customer service, even though I am computer savvy.
I don't need much color, since I mostly print documents, nevertheless I would only consider laser for black or color. The color is definitely better than Brother. However, the color on the HP is a little too saturated and printing color is not quite as sharp as printing black. I made a color copy of a color copy, and the saturation increased, further distorting the original image. You get starter toner cartridges that are about 60% full. HP is not the only manufacturer doing that these days.
The paper tray is a puny 150 pages. The Brother has a 250-sheet tray and I purchased a 500 sheet 2nd tray. You cannot add a second tray to the HP. Also, the HP does not have a manual feed tray for envelopes or other paper. The Brother nicely holds 3 envelopes at a time in its manual feed tray. The HP claims to have a manual feed for envelopes, but all it does is pause printing until you pull out the tray, pull out your paper, slide the guides to envelope size, insert your envelopes, close the tray, and then you may have to tell it to print the envelope (I never bothered to print an envelope from the HP after discovering how convoluted the process is). I would have likely kept the HP if it had a manual feed for envelopes, and I only had to pull out the tray to add fancy bond paper. This AIO is not made for any office work in which you print letters, unless you only print envelopes in batches. So why would any home or small office buy one?
When I print a letter to my Brother, my Word document has the first page(s) formatted as an envelope(s) and the remaining pages letter-size. The documents also have Word's Page Setup defined to pull paper from the designated tray: manual feed for envelopes, 250-sheet Tray 1 for letter-size bond paper for correspondence, and 500-sheet Default Tray (Tray 2) for regular letter-size paper for everything else.
I liked the fact that the HP has a color touchpad as its user interface. But in real use in making copies, you have to touch the screen to wake it up and then hit the print button. Dedicated print buttons would have been preferred, one for black and one for color like the Brother.
The unit stays pretty quiet and printing noise is not excessive. I do not notice the fan running as loud as the Brother after a print or copy job. It occasionally self-calibrates, but infrequent enough to not be excessively annoying. The HP's first page out when printing comes out in one-third or one-quarter the time as the Brother, which takes about 1-minute from sleep mode and acts like it is printing 3-pages before it actually prints the first page. The HP is smaller than the Brother, but I would gladly trade a little height to get a bigger tray and options for a manual feed or an additional tray.

It is very easy to set up. I have it configured for access through Ethernet, and it was far easer to get set up than other network printers I've installed. Other setup options are easy to understand and set. It also supports USB and parallel connections. No printer cables are provided. Software installed quickly and without problems under Windows XP.
Black and white print quality is outstanding -- as good as any printer I've ever used.
The print speed is very good.
Is a very solid machine (it takes two people to lift it). It feels like it is built to last. (see negative comment below)
Copying is easy, and there is an option to collate copies of multipage documents (they call this "stacking").
Toner cartridges are reasonably priced on a cost/page basis.
It has a front auxiliary paper feeder that can be used for envelopes or other media. I find this extremely valuable.
I haven't had any paper jams.
I have successfully printed color CD labels using Neato label material. It handled the thick material fine, and the image was good.
Faxes are easy to send.
-- Negative --
It takes 30 seconds for the first copy to be completed when you do the first print while it's cold. I have an HP 2420d that gets the first copy out in 7 seconds flat.
The machine is heavy and large. Don't try to move it by yourself. (see positive note above).
The color saturation is not as deep as I would like. Don't misunderstand, the color is good, but when printing something like a bar chart with deep, solid colors, the colors aren't as deep as I would like. There may be some setting to adjust this, but I haven't found it.
The machine makes more noise than my HP 2420d, but the noise is not objectionable.
The machine draws a lot of power. My room lights dim when it is warming up.
Overall summary: Very fine color laser printer that is easy to set up, easy to use, fast, and solidly built. I have no regrets with the purchase.

(More customer reviews)This printer will tell you when you are out of toners and need new ones. And when you are out with just one of the color toner, this printer will not allow you to print anything until you replace it with the new toner.
So here is how to override these problem, and you decide when the toner needs to be changed... and not the printer.
1. Slide out the toner trays and put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensors on each color toner. This will make the print think that it has full toner.
2. If you already see "Replace Toner" messages, just RESET it by opening the front COVER and pressing CLEAR and REPRINT together. Scroll up and down to reset desired toner.
3. If you think you have more life and juice left on its drum and laser parts, just reset it and forget it! Open the COVER, and hold down GO and hit UP (+) button. Scroll through the menu to select and reset!!!!
After the "replace toner" message, I reset the counter, and I have printed over 2000 more pages on a same cartridge. But be aware! You will start to see some "sprinkles of toners" on your pages as they are way over used.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the '4070' when I was getting tired of paying for the ink cartridges in my HP DeskJet 6840, especially for 'everyday' home printing (online order confirmations, homework, drawings, etc.) I was also looking for a printer to operate on a Mac network. This one is great! The wireless feature allows you to 'plop' this thing down wherever there's a power cord and setup is fairly easy. It's a single-pass unit (e.g. color and B&W printing are the same print speed) and has duplexing built in. Does a 'realistic' job with color photos (not overly saturated). I don't think it's too noisy as previous reviews have stated, but it's certainly not as quiet as an inkjet. The cartridges are neatly laid out in a removable 'drum' tray, making changeout that much easier. I particularly like the LCD display with 3 backdrop colors (green for 'everythings okeydokey', amber for 'I'm in maintenance mode, so don't bother me' and red for 'Help!'. This screen tilts out so you can read it more easily as you walk by it. There are some notes for those Mac (maybe windoze too???)folks that I'd like to bring up:
1) get the latest firmware update - especially for PDF files, the first version of firmware caused all sorts of problems where files didn't print at all. It may not be an issue, but as I got one of the first ones out I got the original firmware version.
2) memory - get more! Especially if you use the BR3 (Brother's PostScript3 emulator) you'll need at least another 64 MB just to make it work. There may be some confusion as to which memory it takes, but the notch in the connector indicates that it's an SDRAM. I pulled memory out of an old laptop I was parting out and works fine.
If you're looking for a cheaper, water-resistant printout, especially if you need duplex, this is your printer!

UPDATE - almost 2 years later and still running strong. I'd recommend locating the 'TN-115' series of cartridges as the 'TN-110's don't last nearly as long. Unfortunately, many traditional brick-and-mortar stores only carry the 110's
